Dear Parishioners of Saint Catherine,

To the newcomer, the word ‘Philoptochos’ is certainly a daunting one to try to pronounce.  And that is to say nothing of trying to spell it!  No matter.  This concept of ‘friends of the poor’ is one we attempt to live by as Orthodox Christians every day of our lives.

Thus, the Ladies’ Philoptochos Society is known as the philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Church.  As members, we are committed to helping those in need.  For over 80 years, Philoptochos has undertaken a multitude of philanthropic programs to aid the poor, the destitute, the hungry, the sick, the elderly, the unemployed, the orphaned, the imprisoned, the widowed, the disabled, and the victims of disaster, whether they are in the United States or elsewhere in the world.

Our mission is to promote charitable, benevolent and philanthropic outreach, to preserve the sanctity of life and family, and to perpetuate and promote our Orthodox Faith and traditions.  Our goal is to honor our relationship with God by using our gifts, our abilities, our compassion, our empathy, our faith and our love to make a better world for our family, our Orthodox community, and our contemporary society.

An early 20th century Christian hymn is entitled, “Brighten the Corner Where You Are.”  The lyrics by Ina Ogden are simple, yet profound:

‘Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do,

Do not wait to shed your light afar.

To the many duties ever near you now be true.

Brighten the corner where you are!’

We invite all Greek Orthodox faithful women to become members of Philoptochos, whether active or supportive.  Let us “brighten the corner” precisely where we are!

All members, including gentlemen, are encouraged to make a financial pledge to Philoptochos.  The National and Metropolis Philoptochos treasuries receive a total of $25 of every chapter member’s stewardship.  The remainder of each pledge is used in the vibrant work of our chapter here at St. Catherine.  Please join us or renew your existing membership for 2014.  You can make your stewardship check payable to ‘St. Catherine Philoptochos.’

Thank you for your continued love and support!

In His Service,

Kathi White, Vice President/Stewardship
