What is Missions?
Historically, “missions” has been defined as the crossing of cultural and (most often) geographic boundaries in order to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, making disciples, and relating to the whole need of humankind, both spiritual and physical.
The Church is directed to do this in what is called the Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations?” (Matthew 28:19). Today, only 33% of all people consider themselves Christian. In addition, it is estimated that 28% of the world’s population has still not heard the Gospel in a way that they can respond to it affirmatively or negatively. In other words, over 1.8 billion people today have not been presented with the Gospel message. Read more about what missions is about and how it differs from outreach in our home country, the USA.
What is OCMC?
The Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) is the official international missions agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America.
OCMC exists to help fulfill the Great Commission of Christ (Matthew 28:16); the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) strives to establish vibrant Eucharistic communities throughout the world, to develop and support indigenous church leaders, and to strengthen the infrastructure of their churches. OCMC carries out this work primarily, though not solely, in countries where Christianity is in the minority and where the Gospel message has not been proclaimed. OCMC will recruit, train, send, and support Orthodox missionaries to preach, teach, baptize, construct, and minister to the spiritual and physical needs of those being served and saved.
OCMC has been sanctioned by the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America to help the faithful of North America to proclaim the fullness of the Orthodox Christian Faith with the world. Each year hundred of Orthodox Christians answer the call to make disciples of all nations through one of OCMC’s many initiatives which include:
How Can I be Involved?
The three main ways you can be involved are: pray, give, and/or go.
Although you can pray generically for OCMC and its missionaries and programs, and you can provide funds for OCMC that are undesignated, you will find it is more fulfilling to identify specific projects to support and to develop relationships with OCMC missionaries through email and follow their experiences as reported through prayer letters and FaceBook. You can obtain prayer cards for specific missionaries from OCMC to help you remember to pray for them regularly. Long-term missionaries rely on financial donations, which are tax deductible. For your convenience, monthly gifts can be set up as automatic withdrawals from your bank account. Learn more about OCMC long-term missionaries.
You can also participate in short-term mission trips as a member of a team. Not only will you help meet the needs of people overseas, you will gain first hand exposure to what long-term missions is about. There are many people in the Colorado Front Range area who have participated in such trips and would be glad to tell you about their experiences.
OCMC is constantly looking to God to raise up more long-term missionaries. The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Is God calling you to serve Him in this way?
